Memorial for Tyrell Smith | 3000 block of 30th Street SE DC

From a DC police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, May 29, 2020, in the 3000 block of 30th Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 6:23 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location after hearing the sounds of gunshots. Officers canvased the area and located an adult male, suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Tyrell Smith, 19, of Southeast DC.  

At this street memorial site, I spoke with two women who are trying to clean up the neighborhood physically & otherwise. Both had lost sons, numerous family members and friends to violence. They thanked me for my work, and I thanked them for what they do for their community.



Peace and condolences to all, and especially to those who grieve for young Mr. Smith.

In honor of Ronald Collins | 5100 block of A Street SE DC

From a DC police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced an arrest has been made in reference to a homicide that occurred on Monday, June 1, 2020, in the 5100 block of A Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 5:26 am, members of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from an apparent stab wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and determined the victim displayed no signs consistent with life. The decedent has been identified as Ronald Collins, 56, of Southeast DC. On Monday, June 1, 2020, Daniel Gayden, 54, of Capitol Heights, MD, was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed. The detectives’ investigation revealed that this offense was a result of a dispute amongst known parties.  

At this memorial to Mr. Collins, I spoke to a young man who knew the victim, and we exchanged respect and hopes for peace.

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announce an arrest has been made in a homicide that occurred on Saturday, June 6, 2020, in the 1300 block of Brentwood Road NE, Washington DC. At approximately 4:50 pm, members of the Fifth District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and determined the victim displayed no signs consistent with life. The decedent has been identified as Marquis Harrod, 18, of Southeast DC.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Micah Bidgell, 24, of Northeast. DC. He was charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed.

From a DC police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2020, in the 1400 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE, Washington DC. At approximately 2:20 am, members of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the report of the sound of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim and an adult female victim, suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and determined both victims displayed no signs consistent with life. The decedents have been identified as Larkia Izlar, 23, of Southeast DC, and Timothy Hinton, 28, of Suitland, MD. 

A woman I spoke with at this site said they "found the young man and the young woman dead in the car just across the street." She also expressed how sad the violence is.

Lagioria Brinkley's memorial | 1900 block of 16th Street SE Dc

From a DC police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, March 20, 2020, in the 1900 block of 16th Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 9:54 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location after hearing the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and determined the victim displayed no signs consistent with life. The decedent has been identified as Lagioria Brinkley, 36, of Southeast DC.

From DC Witness:  On Mar. 26, 2020, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrested a 19-year-old man in connection to a homicide that occurred in the Fairlawn area of Washington, DC.
According to a press release, Mequan Carthens a resident of Southeast DC was charged, with first-degree murder while armed for allegedly shooting Lagioria Brinkley, 36, on the 1900 block of 16th Street, SE on Mar. 20, 2020.

I listened at length to a number of people on this busy block in the heart of the old section of Anacostia about the troubles there, and in honor of this woman's life.






Street memorial for Christopher Beckwith, Jr. and Willie Leon Brown, Jr. | 1400 block of Fairmont Street NW DC

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Monday, May 25, 2020, in the 1400 block of Fairmont Street NW, Washington DC. At approximately 6:21 pm, members of the Third District responded to the listed location for the sound of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located two adult males, unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported one of the victims to an area hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The second victim was also transported to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition. The decedent was identified as Christopher Beckwith, Jr., 22, of Northwest DC. On Saturday, May 30, 2020, the second victim succumbed to his injuries and has been identified as Willie Leon Brown, Jr., 19, of Northwest DC.

From a Prince Georges County Police report: Homicide Unit detectives charged a suspect in connection with a domestic-related homicide in the Town of Fairmount Heights on Tuesday. The suspect is Charles Kelly, Jr., 43, of Suitland, Maryland. He is charged with fatally shooting Briana Green, 20, of Suitland.

On October 15th, 2019, at approximately 8:15 pm, officers with the Fairmount Heights, Maryland Police Department responded to the 1000 block of 56th Avenue for a shooting. They discovered Green inside of a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead on the scene. The preliminary investigation reveals the motive for this fatal shooting is domestic-related. Kelly and the victim were in a relationship. Kelly was charged with first and second degree murder and additional charges. 

This shrine is in the 1800 block of Q Street SE, Washington, DC. There is a shrine to another slain person on view on the same telephone pole, but I could not learn who it is for.

May both their loved ones be spared any further grief.









Alante Moore memorial | 1500 block of 19th Street SE DC

From a DC police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, June 19, 2020, in the 1500 block of 19th Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 8:12 pm, members of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. A short time later, a second adult male walked into a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim is being treated for life-threatening injuries. The decedent has been identified as Alante Moore, 28, of Southwest DC.   

I spoke to a woman at this shrine. Mr. Moore was shot in a drive-by, and lived in an apartment building near the memorial. He had a baby on the way - his girlfriend is pregnant with his child.

There is another older shrine still standing in this block, and there are two more just around the corner.

Shrines to African American victims murdered by police | Black Lives Matter Plaza (16th Street NW) DC

I photographed these memorials to numerous victims of police violence that were posted at Black Lives Matter demonstrations in Lafayette Park in Washington DC, adjacent to the White House in June 2020. They were erected on a barrier fence after the Tr*mp administration blocked access to the public park. 

The area was recently renamed "Black Lives Matter Plaza" by Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington DC.

Listed on the memorials are Breonna Taylor, Stephon Clark, Botham Jean, Philando Castile, Redel Jones, Sean Reed, George Floyd, Tamir Rice, Kenny Watkins, Michael Brown, Ezell Ford, Michelle Shirley, Laquan McDonald, Jamar Clark, Trayvon Martin, and others.

Say the names. Remember them. Black Lives Matter.

"Stop Killing Our Queens" - shrine for Tamika Jones | 700 block 21st Street NE DC

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2020, in the 700 block of 21st Street NE, Washington DC. At approximately 5:18 pm, members of the Fifth District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an unconscious adult female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Tamika Jones, 45, of Northeast DC.

Jordyn Simmons "You Are The Wind Beneath our Wings" | 1900 block of 18th Street SE DC

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, July 3, 2020, in the 1900 block of 18th Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 11:13 pm, members of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the sound of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. A short time later, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The decedent has been identified as Jordyn Simmons, 20, of Hyattsville, MD. 

May Ms. Simmons have peace and beauty for ever and ever, and her memory be for a blessing.






I spoke with a mother and her pre-teen son at this site, who had heard the gunshots and witnessed the aftermath of this tragic slaying. They were duly concerned about the violence in the community, and expressed frustration and fear. We shared a wish for tranquility, comity, and peace.


Site of the slaying of John Dennis Watts V | 4600 block of Dallas Place, Temple Hills MD

From a PG County Police report: Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in Temple Hills, Maryland. The victim is John Dennis Watts V, 24, of Baltimore. Preliminarily, detectives do not believe this to be a random act of crime. On July 4, 2020, at approximately 9:30 pm, officers responded to the 4600 block of Dallas Place in Temple Hills for a reported shooting. When officers arrived on the scene, they located the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later. The preliminary investigation revealed that three additional people were also shot during this incident. They suffered what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Jaszel Henderson and Terrance Griffin's shrines | 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue SE DC

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue SE, Washington DC. At approximately 1:39 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located two adult males and an adult female suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and determined the two male victims displayed no signs consistent with life. The female victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries.
The decedents have been identified as Jaszel Henderson, 20, and Terrance Griffin, 31, both of Southeast DC.


These two memorials are just off the main avenue. May these two men have eternal rest.

Also: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Monday, July 6, 2020, in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, Washington DC. At approximately 11:25 am, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Everett King, 52, of Southeast DC. 0

I found no evidence of a memorial for Mr. King.

Memorial to Davon McNeal | 1400 block of Cedar Street SE DC

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Saturday, July 4, 2020, in the 1400 block of Cedar Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 9:21 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Davon McNeal, 11, of Southeast DC.

There has been a lot of attention paid to this tragedy. Davon was attending an anti-violence event organized by family members in his neighborhood when he was caught in a crossfire and slain.

By all accounts Davon was an outstanding young man, an athlete of great promise, and his vigil and funeral were attended by hundreds of family, dignitaries, neighbors, and supporters.

Young Mr. McNeal lived in an apartment complex directly behind the historic Frederick Douglass house.

May his memory ever be for a blessing.

Shrine for a triple homicide - Claudette Williams, Marquise Lewis, and Juwan Wade | 5000 block of Bass Place SE DC

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, in the 5000 block of Bass Place SE, Washington DC. At approximately 1:15 am, members of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the report of the sound of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located an unconscious male victim and an unconscious female victim, inside of a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. A second unconscious adult male victim was located nearby suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and determined that the victims displayed no signs consistent with life. The decedents have been identified as Claudette Williams, 56, of Southeast DC, Marquise Lewis, 29, of Clinton, MD, and Juwan Wade, 20, of Northeast DC. 

May all three rest in perpetual peace.

At approximately 7:40 pm, members of the Fifth District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an unconscious male victim, inside of a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Evrett Harris, 19, of Southeast, DC.

In honor of Arvel Wills | 500 block of I Street NE DC

 From a DC police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, August 15, 2020, in the 500 block of I Street NE, Washington DC. At approximately 5:35 pm, members of the First and Fifth Districts responded to the listed location for the report of the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and found no signs consistent with life. The victim remained on the scene until being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The decedent has been identified as Arvel Wills, 31, of Northeast DC.



Street shrine for Christopher Brown | site of mass shooting, 3300 block of Dubois Place SE DC

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday, August 9, 2020, in the 3300 block of Dubois Place SE, Washington DC. At approximately 12:20 am, members of the Sixth District were at the listed location, due to a large gathering, when they heard the sounds of gunshots. Officers canvassed the area and located multiple victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported victims to area hospitals for treatment of non-life and life threatening injuries. After all life-saving efforts failed, a juvenile male victim was pronounced dead. In total, twenty-two victims sustained gunshot wounds. Two others sustained injuries while fleeing from the scene. The decedent has been identified as Christopher Brown, 17, of Northeast DC. 

According to press reports, twenty-two people were shot during a large gathering in the Greenway neighborhood. efforts re being made to calm the situation and to increase the safety of the community. 

May the many wounded recover and be healed, and may young Mr. Brown rest in peace.
