From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Saturday, July 4, 2020, in the 1400 block of Cedar Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 9:21 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Davon McNeal, 11, of Southeast DC.
There has been a lot of attention paid to this tragedy. Davon was attending an anti-violence event organized by family members in his neighborhood when he was caught in a crossfire and slain.
By all accounts Davon was an outstanding young man, an athlete of great promise, and his vigil and funeral were attended by hundreds of family, dignitaries, neighbors, and supporters.
Young Mr. McNeal lived in an apartment complex directly behind the historic Frederick Douglass house.
May his memory ever be for a blessing.
There is much more material on this very sad situation in articles in the Washington Post.
Thanks to reporter/activist John Muller for his help.
Peace. Peace.
